TIBET & COPENHAGEN: Climate scientists have called Tibet the 'world's third pole' because it contains the biggest ice fields outside of the Arctic and Antarctic. The Tibetan plateau is warming twice as fast as the rest of the world and the impact of the now melting glaciers is feared to be catastrophic. Parliamentarians from 16 countries wrote to the head of the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen that was held this month, urging negotiators to take into account the global implications of climate change in Tibet.

VOICES FROM THE INSIDE: Tibetans in Tibet have often had to rely on outsiders to tell their story, but these days, even within tight monitoring and censorship controls, Tibetan blogs have become an important source of information about what is going on in the minds of Tibetans. Dechen Pemba moved to Beijing in 2006 to learn Chinese, and to see for herself what life in China was like. During this time she traveled to Tibet several times and got to know a number of Tibetans living in Beijing before she was eventually deported back to London in July 2008, just before the Beijing Olympics. She now works for the blog translation site, High Peaks, Pure Earth.
